The Name
The Houston Open Development User Group started life in 2010 as the “Houston Dynamic Language User Group” and was founded by Ryan Riley. As the HDLUG, the group held sessions on Ruby, Python, Clojure, and other languages that ran both on and off the .NET DLR.
In 2011, Michael Koby (acting president after Ryan moved), decided that a change needed to be made. Upon discussion with the group members, the name change to “Houston Open Development User Group” took place and focus changed to being the group that talked and learned about the bleeding edge of software development. If it interests us, we’re probably going to have a session on it. The focus for the group, as decided by its participants, is to be the group that “does stuff” or gets hands on with what we’re learning about.
